Dwindling Educational Standards: Alumni Need To Be More Financially Committed – Don

A renowned computer analysts and lecturer, Dr. Ikechukwu Innocent Umeh, has identified some of the critical roles played by Alumni Associations in the development of school system globally, insisting that by being more proactive in their dealings, especially with their finances, the nations educational sector would begin to witness the desired transformation.
He was however quick to point out that that for any Alumni bodies to be able to function well, a member of such an association must be integrated into the school management board in order to give the association members a sense of belonging in the day to day running of the institution.
Dr. Umeh is also as Associate Professor and a lecturer at the Computer Science department of Nnamdi Azukas University, Akwa, made the suggestion in a lecture titled; The Role Of Alumni Associations in Sustainable Development of Tertiary Education Management”, delivered on Wednesday, as part of the activities marking the “Alumni Day”, at the 16th Convocation of Delta state University, (Delsu) Abraka.
While highlighting the role of Alumni Associations both within and outside the country to include; Ambassadorial, Engagement, Advisory and Interfacing, he emphasized that the most important of all these roles is financing, adding that no meaningful impact can be made in developing an institution without adequate funding.
He thanked to Delsu VC, Prof Andy Egunyenga, for the plan to infuse the Alumni Association into the management team of the institution, noting that such move would further strengthen the synergy between the members of the Association and the school management.

He enjoined the members of Delsu Alumni to be more deliberate and intentional in their collective efforts to position the institution to greater heights.
Earlier in goodwill message, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Andy Egunyenga, had commended the members of Delsu Alumni Association for their renewed commitment towards the upliftment of the institution and urged them to continue in that trajectory for the betterment of the students.
The VC who represented at he occasion by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, (DVC Academic) Prof Ochuko Anomoharan, hinted that based on the importance attached to the Alumni Association, the management had concluded plans to bring them into the management team, so as to carry them along in the affairs of the institution.
In his opening remark, Mr. Joseph Igbuwe, President Delsu Alumni Association, had applauded the remarkable achievements interms of infrastructural development and qualitative education made by the current management team, ably led by Prof Andy Egunyenga, and urged them to sustain the tempo.
