Turnberry International Schools advocates unity thru sport

The sleepy and serene environment of Asoore at Atan, Ota in Ado Odo Local Government Area of Ogun State was agog with the presence of dignitaries that graced the Inter-house Sports Competition of Turnberry International Schools held recently.

With the theme: Building the Nation; Nurturing the Healthy Minds, it was a carnival-like event as students and parents turned out in their large number, decked in varied colourful sport wears.

In his remarks, Prince Olu Akinlabi, representing the schools proprietor, Mr. Joseph Oluyemi, stressed how collective sporting engagements of healthy young minds can lead to quality nation building.

“Inter-house sports competitions offer opportunities for students to get involved in social progressions with open minds. No situation will appear as a do or die affair. Talents would also be discovered with readiness to inspire them to greater heights, with positive values to impact the society,” he declared.

At the sporting event, the students were grouped according to their houses such as Benson, Johnson, Oluyemi and Salami. While sporting activities like high jump, long jump, javelin and discus throwing had been decided earlier, sportsmanship show of swiftness, dexterity, glamour and deftness were displayed in march past and other track events to the admiration of the audience, especially the parents.

At the end of the competition, trophies were awarded each house based on the aggregate scores in march past and track events.

In her vote of thanks, the schools director, Mrs. Elizabeth Ajayi submitted that since sports bring together the major domains in education, events like the inter-house sport should be considered a veritable tool for instilling the best culture in the students who are future leaders.

“Competition like this should not bring up unhealthy rivalry. Some would win others may not. Resilience and team spirit should remain and be nurtured to a path of endless possibilities,” she noted.
