Babcock University VC Urges Media Responsibility in National Peace
The Vice Chancellor of Babcock University, Prof. Tayo Ademola, has underscored the vital role of media practitioners in prioritizing national peace, unity, and development while cautioning against inciting violence or hatred through fake news.
During the institutions annual media parley at its Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State location, Prof. Tayo emphasized the significant responsibility that accompanies the work of journalists, urging them to be circumspect and thorough in their reporting.
“With the privilege you have, comes also a great responsibility to the peace, unity, and development of our dear country. As journalists, you are all aware of the decisions you make; the stories you report, the pictures you paint, and the messages that are conveyed to your audiences. It is your responsibility to strive always to put the peace, unity, and development of our country first in your reporting,” stated Prof. Tayo.
He cautioned journalists to exercise caution, emphasizing that their actions and reporting have a significant impact on the nation. He urged adherence to ethical standards, responsible reporting, and the dissemination of accurate, unbiased information to the public.
Highlighting the importance of familiarizing themselves with professional principles and complying with legal frameworks, the Vice Chancellor urged journalists to avoid actions that could breed hate or incite violence.
Prof. Tayo also addressed the delicate relationship between journalists, politicians, and business figures, calling for introspection when accusations of bias arise. He stressed the ethical commitment journalists must uphold to maintain integrity and objectivity in their reporting.
In conclusion, the Vice Chancellor urged journalists to use their power wisely in fostering unity and national development. He encouraged them to report news that unites rather than divides the populace.
Responding to the call for responsibility, Mr. Mojeed Alabi, Chairman of the Education Writers Association of Nigeria (EWAN), affirmed journalists commitment to their profession and the societys trust in their work. He commended Babcock Universitys management for the relationship and assured that EWAN members remain dedicated to making a positive impact on society without compromising their integrity.
