Nigeria Customs Service Suspends Sale of Seized Food Items Following Stampede
The Nigeria Customs Service has decided to halt the sale of seized food items to Nigerians, following a tragic stampede that resulted in casualties at the Nigeria Customs Service Old Zonal Headquarters in Yaba, Lagos State, on Friday.
Abdullahi Maiwada, a spokesperson for Customs, conveyed this information in a statement on Monday. The decision to suspend the sale of seized food items was made in light of the unfortunate incident.
The Customs had initially announced on February 20, 2024, that it would proceed with the sale of seized food items to alleviate the prevailing hardship in the country. However, in the aftermath of the stampede, the Customs authorities deemed it necessary to suspend the exercise until a thorough investigation into the events of Friday, February 23, 2024, is conducted.
The statement emphasized the need to understand the circumstances surrounding the stampede and stated, "This should help us to properly articulate more robust and comprehensive action that will not defeat the noble intention."
