Highlife Legend Kabaka Passes Away at 77

The highlife music community mourns the loss of a true icon as Godwin Opara, widely known as Kabaka, has passed away at the age of 77. Kabaka, who reemerged after a hiatus of two decades with his celebrated "Abialam" album in September 2023, bid farewell to the world.

Derda Promotions, Kabaka's management team, confirmed the demise of the revered musician, whose contributions revolutionized the highlife music genre, on Thursday. Amarachi Anyanwu, the Chief Operating Officer of Derda Promotions, conveyed the news through a statement released on Friday morning.

In the statement, Derda Promotions expressed deep sorrow, announcing, "Derda Promotions is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our esteemed artist, Godwin Kabaka Opara, an icon who pioneered and revolutionised Highlife music, on March 21st, 2024."

Kabaka's departure comes just six months after his triumphant return to the highlife music scene. Renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his songwriting skills and guitar mastery, Kabaka's melodies resonated profoundly with countless admirers.

In 1973, he co-founded The Oriental Brothers International Band, a powerhouse in the realm of highlife music known for its socially conscious lyrics, musical dexterity, and authentic style that captivated audiences across Africa and beyond.

Transitioning to a solo career in 1976 with The Kabaka International Guitar Band, Kabaka continued to produce exceptional highlife music, releasing fourteen albums and crafting hits like "Mangala Special."

Venturing into Ezebongo rhythms, Kabaka showcased his versatility and creativity, pushing the boundaries of musical expression. Collaborating with The Imo City Band further solidified his legacy as an unyielding luminary in the highlife genre.

His resurgence in September 2023, marked by the release of "The Return of Kabaka" album, resonated globally, amassing over a million streams and earning a spot among the top 100 albums worldwide. Kabaka's legacy in highlife music will endure as a testament to his immense talent and unwavering dedication to his craft.
