This Video Shows How Similar ‘Black Panther’ & ‘The Lion King’ Are

If your answer to “What’s your favourite Disney movie?” is not The Lion King, then you’re wrong. We can forgive Black Panther not being your favourite Marvel movie, but it should at least be in your top three.

Though decades apart, both films are worthy of being watched over and over again, and if you’re a Lion King fan, you should have picked up some references to the Disney classic while watching the Marvel hit.

The Lion King is loosely based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, as Hamlet’s father was killed by his brother, Claudius, who wanted to take the throne. Much like in The Lion King, Simba’s father was killed by his brother, Scar, who took over the pride lands and exiled Simba.

While we think saying that Black Panther is a modern-day version of The Lion King would be a bit of a stretch, however, you can’t deny that both films share obvious similarities — thematically, narratively and aesthetically.

In Black Panther, T’Challa must step up to the throne after his father’s death, and overcome his cousin and would-be usurper, Killmonger. In both movies, the storyline is based on the fact that a member of the family wants the throne, and will do anything to get it.

A recently released video by Couch Tomato explains all the similarities between the films — from the characters to themes. Beyond the obvious main characters in both films, it draws similarities between Nakia and Nala, Zuri and Rafiki, and even shows how their characters carry the stories along.
